Leap-Year-Day! Feb. 29, 2008 ~

Two of my other paintings at an art show in Long Island (it was supposed to be a masquerade @ Lefty's Candlelight Bar Grill... i think i was the only one wearing an actual mask...)

top: 'Siwan bed' (where I slept while in Siwa Oasis, Egypt, complete with purple mosquito netting)

bottom: "Quiero dormir con las estrellas, pero, 'La historia es una pesadilla que lo trato despertar' " -- "I want to sleep with the stars, but History is a nightmare from which I am trying to awake(n from)." -- the latter part of the title comes from a quote in Joyce's Ulysses. I found it translated into Spanish at a photography exhibit in NYC, and thought it fit... I have a lot to say about this painting (don't let it's child-like appearance fool ya ;) ) ...

According to the artist, the laws of the Koran are not violated... and here, I caught the woman sneaking in a visitor...

This young lad demonstrated the "Polite Umbrella."

Basically, the umbrella has a handle that the user can pull, temporarily 'shrinking' the umbrella's space in cramped situations. Not the most incredible invention, but cute and...polite.

Computational Couture Show: Skorpions

As a Scorpio myself, I am indeed intrigued by these Skorpion outfits. These two young women - muscle girl, and girl in white pod behind & to the left of her demonstrate how these mysterious and electric garments are worn. Here is an excerpt from pamphlet:

"... are kinetic electronic garments that move and change on the body in slow orgnaic motions. They can be imagined as parasites that inhabit the skin of the host. ... they integrate electronic fabrics, the shape-memory alloy Nitinol, mechanical actuators such as magnets, soft electronic circuits , and traditional textile construction... the 'Skwrath' (one with red silk lining) has an abdomen composed of 3 interlocking segments, embroidered with SMA (shape memory alloy) threads that are activated through a custom electronic board to contract and curl back..."

(beginning of January 2008) ... The tree has windows in it, being a cross between a treehouse and a skyscraper. There are actually skyscapers in the distance, lining the bottom of the mural.

I finally figured out how to log back into my blog!!! Oh, the possibilities...

I have spent the past couple of months doing many cool things, including moving back to the NYC / New Jersey area from Florida, interning with artist Ellen Frank in East Hampton, Long Island (check it out at www.efiaf.org/cities/citiesofpeace.htm ), moving into and working at a house full of international students, interns, and travelers in Brooklyn (where I also painted a mural), and recently traveling to Boston with my sister and Mom for a "computational couture" fashion show. I'll be posing these soon!

Karkade (hibiscus drink) is VERY good... you can drink it hot or cold. These are delightfully brimming baskets of the hibiscus (or "karkade"). My boyfriend Conrad and I would often order karkade when we could... sometimes it was hard to get in a restaurant!

It's been too long. TOOO long. In fact I had some OOolong tea for breakfast this morning. *tee-hee*. For real, I have so many pictures of my trips, I don't know how to organize them all. I keep waiting for them to do it on their own, I guess. Well ,I'm tired of procrasinating.... Here's a few pics in the meantime, while I continue to go crazy with all the dream-like images that are still so much more than pictures in my head. They're feelings, tastes, sounds.... intense sensations. I am so lucky to have a such a well-travelled, cool, energetic, and upbeat boyfriend. The way I experienced this dream-land is due in part (many, many parts) to him.These are the lovely stairs descending into Cleopatra (i.e. Juba) Spring in Siwa Oasis, Egypt.

Hostel in the Forest

On my way back to St. Augustine, Florida, once again stopped at one of my most favorite places in the world... the Hostel in the Forest in Brunswick, Georgia... I had this whole treehouse to myself (!)- although I've been there more than a couple of times, this was my first time in the "Bamboo Hut", which overlooks an AWESOME labyrinth... I swam in the lake, once during the day, the other at night, under the stars with some cool people from Long Island...saw a shooting star with a girl I only remember as Two Ships Passing (her band's name?)... A lovely dinner, met some cool people... and saw Jenn everywhere... the angel shower was nice, too...

more photos from my trip to Europe coming soon.... but I'm leaving for Egypt in a couple of weeks!...

Jenn, Dahlink

I am writing this because I just lost a good friend, Jenn Cakert. She's the one that got me started on this blog site! Her blog is: www.touristofeverything.blogspot.com. It is an awesome site. I miss her a lot. I keep wanting to write all these things and share them, but for the moment, I am still in a state of disbelief. Words swirl in my head faster than I can make sense of them (which isn't really new). I've been taking pictures and writing poems for a long time, but usually I'm too shy to share them, or too techinically incapable of processing them... I could always count on Jenn's comments on my photo blog, as she was often the only commentator/critic/fan, and that has kept my creative spirit alive for the past couple of months (I started this blog in... November?....) I can't even begin to say, now looking back in retrospect, how important her encouragemnet was.

Becasue she had such a zingy zest for life and such awesome style, I can only hope that in the future will bring her fame - she deserves it, and she would have accomplished that anyway, had she stayed with us longer. If anyone comes to this site, please know how much I miss Jenn Cakert. I hope to post more photos of my trip to Europe, as well as other things soon. She would have wanted me to...
