Peacock on the grounds of the Fountain of Youth (it's doin' the mating dance!)

Big boys at play! :) ...

plastering "Perro Menendez" with lovin' care...

Kathleen Deagan (center, white T-shirt), of the Florida Museum of Natural History & Univ. of Florida in Gainesville oversees the casting process. Madelyn Troyanek, a photograper for our local paper, wathces & takes pictures!

close-up of stratigraphy at the grounds of the Fountain of Youth Archaeology Park. St. Augustine is the first U.S. American settlement to be continuously inhabited by Europeans, since 1565... The darker top layer is full of oyster shell, basically indicating a trash heap made by the settlers and / or Indians. Where this layer ends (the lighter, finer sandy soil) is pretty much Pre-Contact time (Indain settlement, before the Europeans came)... Kathy D. and some of the other archaeologists believe that the dog was a pet, because it was laid out so nicely.

squirting water on paper towels for the first layer of protection (the dog was transported to Gainesville for study at the lab at the Florida Museum)

Dog (dubbed "Perro Menendez") found at the Fountain of Youth, here in St. Augustine... Kathleen Deagan of Univ. of Florida is leading the dig here! The archaeologists believe it to be anywhere between 500 - 1,000 yrs. old! I got to watch the team cover it with plaster...

Washington Oaks State Park

Yesterday I went to Washington Oaks with Amy, my friend Dana's girlfriend. We had fun looking at all the wildlife and lush green plantlife ~ an then we went to the beach! Amy spotted an alligator, and I had fun watching a lizard on this huge leaf...
